Ways to become a part of Special Olympics Surrey

Anyone with an intellectual disability is eligible to participate in the Special Olympics programme regardless of age or ability level.

Special Olympics Surrey offers a full range of training and competition opportunities in summer and winter sports to all people with intellectual disabilities.

Children and adults with intellectual disabilities who participate in the Special Olympics sports programme develop improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence and a more positive self-image. They grow mentally, socially and spiritually and ultimately discover not only new friends, abilities and talents, but their “voices” as well.

'The Unsung Heroes'

Special Olympics has more than 700,000 volunteers around the world today.  As a matter of fact, Special Olympics would not exist today, and could not have been created, without the time, energy, commitment and enthusiasm of its volunteers. As a grass-roots organization, Special Olympics relies on volunteers at all levels of the movement to ensure that every athlete is offered a quality sports training and competition experience.

Come and join the team of volunteers at Special Olympics Surrey (SOS) and support your local teams.

Who can volunteer?

You don’t need a sport background to volunteer with SOS. All you need is enthusiasm for helping empower people with intellectual disabilities through sport. Some volunteers offer a few hours of their time at specific events, while others work several hours a week year-round. Whatever your interests, talents, background and availability, we are sure there are volunteer opportunities for you and we would love to hear from you.

Why volunteer with Special Olympics Surrey?

There are many reasons to get involved, and many benefits, including:

Building friendships and networking connections

Developing new skills for personal and professional development

Gaining volunteer hours for school programs

Getting involved with your community

Sharing your love of sport

And, most of all, experiencing the joy of working with our athletes!

What volunteer opportunities are available?

Whether you can give a few hours at an event or want to get involved weekly, we have a position for you. You can become a coach, assistant coach, or volunteer at a specific activity or event.

Coaches play a unique and indispensable role in Special Olympics. Coaches provide the sports skills and spirit that define a true athlete. In addition, coaches are role models and character builders. Coaches give Special Olympics athletes the most immediate awareness of their own worth, ability, courage and capacity to grow and improve.

Special Olympics coaches:

Obtain necessary facilities and equipment for training.

Help to recruit athletes and assistant coaches.

Assist athletes in learning sports skills and applying them in competitions.

Encourage confidence and self-esteem through sport.

Conduct demonstrations in the community.

Help start Partners Clubs of peer coaches with their athletes.

Start Unified Sports® teams.

Special Olympics coaches often find that the personal rewards received are equal to or even outweigh the benefits they offer the athletes. Special Olympics coaches have a unique opportunity to work with athletes in competitive situations to assist in their training for life.
