SOS - Skiing
Our Special Olympics Surrey Ski Group is now firmly established at the Aldershot Dry Ski Slope. There has been very little support for a seperate Winter training session at Sandown this year so we shall train only at Aldershot. The slope is very easy to reach from our area via the A3 and the A31. It is one of the few dry slopes which have sprinklers that keep the matting in good skiing condition, even in dry weather. We train every month on the second Sunday at 10:00am for 1 hour during the ski season and 2 hours for the rest of the year. We have 23 current active skiers, all are either full or affiliate members of DSUK who's volunteers actually run the Aldershot training. New skiers are always welcome. They are able to accept new SOS members who have never skied before only by arrangement as the volunteer instructors have to be allocated trainees for each session. Our novices are progressing well and most are already able to race at Novice level or some even intermediate. We joined the West Midlands group for a weekends training at the Hemel Hempstead Indoor Snow Slope in July. This was very successful and will hopefully become an annual event. We have a team entered for the West Midlands Ski Races on Saturday 16th October comprising of 1 Novice, 5 Intermediates & 4 Advanced Skiers. 9 of our skiers will be joining the Bronley group for a weeks race training in Serre Chevaller next March 2011. We have been actively fund raising to cover their care and coaching costs so that they only have to pay their personal costs which will be £600 per person. This is an excellent deal which includes flights, half board and a lift pass covering all this extensive ski area, thanks to Denis Coulon who is organising this years trip. We shall soon be recruiting our team for the Britihs Nationals in Pila January 2012. We have 15 skiers who have declared an interest. The only qualification is to have competed in at least one open race meeting prior to the games. The British Team for the next World Winter Games in South Korea in 2013 will be chosen from those comprting in Pila, we are aiming for a strong Surrey Team. Clive Friend
